WHAT IS A COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAM?

A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough evaluation of your visual health performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. It typically includes a series of tests to evaluate your vision, eye movements, eye muscle strength, and overall eye health. The exam may include a dilated eye exam, in which eye drops are used to dilate your pupils and allow the doctor to examine the inside of your eye. In addition, your eye care professional may screen for eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration. It is recommended that adults have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, depending on age and risk factors.

WHAT DOES AN EYE EXAM INCLUDE?

At our facility, we perform a comprehensive adult eye exam that includes a range of tests and procedures. From simple vision tests, such as reading an eye chart, to more in-depth evaluations, such as examining the tissues inside your eyes with a powerful lens. 

We begin by taking the patient's medical history and family history to get a complete picture of eye health. Our team then moves on to testing visual acuity, preliminary testing of pupil response to light and color vision, and determining refractive status to identify astigmatism, farsightedness or nearsightedness. 

We also perform eye teaming, eye focusing, and eye movement tests to assess how well both eyes work together. Finally, a thorough eye health evaluation is performed, analyzing all structures and tissues. Additional procedures are performed as needed.

WHO SHOULD BE TESTED AND HOW OFTEN?

Taking care of your eye health means getting comprehensive eye exams starting at age 3. Catching problems early can help prevent serious vision and eye health problems. Want to know who needs to be tested and how often?

Healthy adults under age 60 with no eye problems - get an eye exam every two years;

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, get an eye exam every one to two years to update your prescription;

People with diabetes - get an eye exam every year because you're at higher risk for eye disease;
